Winter + Spring 2024 News!

A few cardinal rules of being an artist are always true for me: I can sleep when I’m dead, and my news is always behind. It’s silly, but it’s the double edged sword of having a great time in this world is that I have a hard time keeping up with everything that is happening. (I probably need an assistant, I know.)

Without further ado, here’s the news from the past few months:

Exhibitions:
- Love Letters to Her: Olivia Ezinga and I were so excited to put together such a beautiful exhibition at Patch & Remington in Marcellus, Michigan last August! That gallery is one of my favorite places on the planet and it’s always so exciting to be a part of an intensely creative curatorial process. Olivia and I are looking forward to travelling our exhibition to other spaces in the US!
- The Prelude: The first exhibition from NOVA24 | Photo + Film Festival was a complete success! Curated by myself and Raymar, the artists featured were some of the most innovative minds in the lens based scene in Detroit. For more information about our exhibition, visit here. The festival is coming in July 2024 - more news to come!
- Homecoming: Being selected as a part of the 2022-2023 Homecoming Cohort was an incredible honor! I’m so grateful to be included amongst my friends and colleagues Christina Leslie and Brendan Brooks. The weekend of events was a beautiful celebration of everything new and fresh in photography. Thank you again to the entire Homecoming crew - Alanna Airitam, Dana Stirling, Eric Kunsman, Michael Chovan-Dalton, and Yoav Friedlander!
- Open Theme @ Praxis: Aline Smithson curated an incredible exhibition this year at Praxis Gallery and Photographic Arts Center in Minneapolis, MN. It was especially fun to attend because my student, Dalayni Boston, was also chosen to be a part of the exhibition!
- The Untended Garden | Capsule Exhibition + Book Launch: The Untended Garden Book is FINALLY here!! The last time that I had an exhibition at Ferndale Area District Library, it was six years ago with Hyperstimulation. This was a beautiful experience overall and I can’t be more grateful. - Homecoming: The publication for the Homecoming Cohort was absolutely beautifully designed and created. Printed by Booksmart Studio in Rochester, NY, the book features images and information for all of the artists in the cohort.
- Borderline Press | Common Ground Issue 02: Common Ground is a publication that features female and nonbinary artists in all stages of their career. This issue was curated by Melissa Grace Kreider. Order your own copy here!

- College for Creative Studies | Adjunct Faculty - Photography: Adding onto the exciting pile of entertaining activities in my life, I’m currently teaching Advanced Studio: Art + Commerce at CCS! It’s really exciting to be a part of the department that helped me cultivate my talent and drive. <3
- Vice President | Hazel Park Arts Council: Supporting the arts in my community is one of my greatest passions. I’m excited to be on the executive board of the council and to help us do amazing things in the city of Hazel Park!

Love Letters to Her - Patch & Remington Exhibition

Olivia and I are SO excited to announce our new exhibition, Love Letters to Her, at Patch & Remington in Marcellus, MI during the month of August.

As a part of my summer sabbatical every year (haha!) for the past three years in Marcellus, the gallery has lovingly allowed me to utilize the space in whatever way I wish. In 2021, I had my solo exhibition A Siren’s Call with work from my residency at The Siren Detroit. In 2022, I brought a whole party with me by having Silver Water Collective’s travelling exhibition Sterling Presence Redux come to the gallery. This year, I invited Olivia to show her work Write Yourself A Love Letter alongside selected images from The Untended Garden to create a work that is about femininity, strength, and finding yourself.

We can’t wait to see you during the exhibition!

Spring + Summer 2023 News!

Time for the Summer 2023 roundup of everything amazing that has been happening!

The biggest accomplishment is The Untended Garden book is finally completed. US Preorders are now open! I can’t wait for everyone to see what a beautiful labor of love that this has been. I’m so appreciative of my contributors, Dr. Anita Bates and Sarah Ayers, for their beautiful essays about my work. The book will be in an edition of 250, with 15 books set aside for a special edition with a print from Act I - more info coming soon! Link to the US Presale!
Two pieces from The Untended Garden - Act I are currently being shown at the Scarab Club in Detroit, MI as a part of their 52nd Annual Contemporary Photography Exhibition. Shanna Merola juried the exhibition and it has to be one of the best and most innovative contributions to the photography landscape in the city. I’m honored to be a part of it.

I was honored to be a part of multiple amazing exhibitions during the spring.

Curator Mark Sink included my work in two Denver Month of Photography Exhibitions: Conceptual Photography Exhibition at D’Art Gallery and the Big Picture Colorado. I will have more information soon about where my Big Picture image will be located as public art in Denver!

Curator Sarah Ayers took six series of my work on the road to the Affordable Art Fair NYC as a part of Patch and Remington’s partnership with Arbor3 Arts! The Siren Collection was selected as a part of the New York Spring: Fair Directors Picks and featured during the Female Focus for Women’s History Month.
My work was also a part of a two person exhibition at Patch and Remington: From NYC to Marcellus - Mara Magyarosi-Laytner and Martyna Alexander. It was wonderful to see the response that the city of Marcellus had to our NYC exhibition!

Here are the beautiful things coming up:

Olivia Ezinga and I are coming back to Patch and Remington this August for our two person exhibition. I’m so excited to be paired with an artist who explores femininity in a way that will complement The Untended Garden work perfectly! Our opening will be on First Friday, August 4th.
I have been keeping this a bit quiet, but Raymar and I are in the midst of starting a photography and film festival for Detroit in July 2024. NOVA24 | Photo + Film Festival will be hosting a community meeting at The Congregation Detroit on Tuesday, August 1st from 6-8pm. Anyone who has an interest in the festival is welcome to attend. 2022 Round Up + 2023 January News!

January 2023 - Listen, I’m swell at a lot of things. One thing I’m absolutely terrible at? Keeping up with the News section here on this website, haha.

If you truly want to keep up with my up to date, moment by moment musings, follow me on Instagram. I try my best to post when things are happening on there.

That said, here’s some of the beautiful news from the last half of 2022!

I had three pieces in the PH21 Gallery Photographic Visions exhibition in Budapest, Hungary. This biennial exhibition features mini-series of selected artists, aiming to celebrate portfolios that are progressive and visionary. This was my second exhibition with the gallery!
My work finally made it’s way to the Pacific Northwest! A selection of The Untended Garden - Act I was projected during the Light Conversation Vol. 3 event curated by Small Talk Collective in August! The event was held outside at the incredible Oregon Center for Contemporary Art.
One of my favorite things of the past year - my work from The Untended Garden was a 2022 Photo Lucida Critical Mass Finalist! Not only that, but we had multiple finalists from Silver Water Collective - Christina Leslie, Emma Hopson, and Brianna Dowd. Bri went on to be in the Top 50! Surrounded by giants!
2022 was the year of the photography festival - my work was included in group exhibitions with the Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival in Toronto, Canada as well as the FotoFocus Biennial in Cincinnati, OH with the SPE Women’s Caucus exhibition at Xavier University. Additionally, I was honored to represent Silver Water Collective at the 20/20 Photo Festival panel discussion with Lux et Libera and other incredible women photography organizations
Beyond the SPE Women’s Caucus exhibition, SPE Midwest was an incredible experience! I had the opportunity to partner with my friend, curator Sarah Ayers from Patch & Remington in Marcellus, MI, for our discussion In Conversation: Rural Gallery | Urban Artists about the benefits of artists putting their work in unconventional places and spaces. I also participated in the panel discussion for the SPE Women’s Caucus exhibition with the other incredible artists.
The exhibition Your Body Belongs To You through ShutterHub has been extended into the end of February 2023! This exhibit features over 200 images from women and nonbinary photographers in a beautiful outdoor experience in St Gilles Croix de Vie, France.

Here’s some additional news for 2023!

The Untended Garden - Echo is currently being shown at BasBlue in Detroit! This collection was curated by Alison Wong from Wasserman Projects featuring students, alumni, faculty, and staff from College for Creative Studies!
The Untended Garden - Thrive is on an adventure to Athens, OH for the Ohio University Art Gallery biennial Alternatives exhibition Image as Object. The exhibition runs through February 17th, with a closing reception on Feburary 16th starting at 5pm.
Images from the show A Siren’s Call will be featured in the Patch & Remington exhibit at the Affordable Art Fair in Chelsea, New York City. Tickets are available for the event on March 22nd-26th!
Production and design work on The Untended Garden book is still happening! Looking forward to everyone being able to see it in real life soon.

Silver Water Collective - Sterling Presence Redux

July 2022 - We are so excited to announce our next SWC exhibition, Sterling Presence Redux, at Patch & Remington (@patchandremington) in Marcellus, MI.

History, memory, identity, time, decolonization, and perception are explored in the exhibition Sterling Presence Redux featured at Patch & Remington from Silver Water Collective. Each featured artist employs a particular process and technique that challenges the boundaries of traditional photography in her work.

While each artist comes from a unique experience and perspective, photography helps them to communicate their shared internal struggles as women in contemporary society and art.

Bobby Lee Magyarosi - Scrambled Eggs Album Release

July 2022 - I’m really excited and proud to announce that I created the official album art for my brother Bobby Lee Magyarosi’s new solo album, Scrambled Eggs.

My inspiration was to truly show my brother and who he is, past and present. This artwork honors the artist, musician, and songwriter that he has been for his entire life. It was a true collaboration between us and there are many cool references that you can find on the inside spread and back cover.

A few fun facts: we shot the initial images at Brown’s Diner in Nashville. The images were shot using the mirror wands from the Lensbaby Omni Universal Expansion Pack, which caused the cool reflections. All of the handwriting on the artwork is Bobby’s own. Plus, all of it uses my favorite process - hand sanitizer transfers with the objects that were used in the making of the work placed on top.

He currently has a new website up along with handling album pre-sales. Contact him if you would like to order a copy! Additionally, there will be a set of limited edition prints available of two pieces from this work at his album release party on August 4th at the Roasting Room in Bluffton, SC!

Your Body Belongs To You - Shutter Hub

June 2022 - Images from The Untended Garden are currently featured in the exhibit Your Body Belongs To You with Shutter Hub in Saint Gilles Croix de Vie, France. The open air exhibition shows work from over 100 female or nonbinary artists on the topic of body autonomy and identity through photography.

SCAD Atlanta Digital Screens - Public Art

June 2022 - One of the most beautiful adventures of the drive home from Savannah after graduation was being able to stop and see the digital screens at SCAD Atlanta. The six digital screens featured ten foot tall images from The Untended Garden for 15 minutes each on rotation along with four other SCAD artists. We were selected by the curators at SCAD Art Sales and Paula Wallace, the president of SCAD, for this public art exhibition throughout the month of June.

This was an incredible way to culminate my experience as a SCAD MFA student. I can’t wait for more potential collaborations with public art and SCAD in the future!

MFA in Photography - Savannah College of Art and Design

June 2022 - One of the most important accomplishments of my life so far and a culmination of twenty years of work - I was able to walk across the stage and receive my MFA in Photography from the Savannah College of Art and Design.

Hilariously, I was able to take an image in the same exact position that was in during my MA in Arts Administration graduation six years ago. Behold - the glorious evidence of a double masters!

May 2022 - Silver Water Collective had such a delightful experience at the Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival in Toronto in May - we were able to have five of our ten members attend! Hundreds of people were able to view and discuss the work that we have created. It was an incredible opportunity to be a part of one of the largest international photography festivals in the world!

Alternative Narratives - Women's History Month

April 2022 - Alternative Processes selected images from The Untended Garden to be a part of their exhibit Alternative Narratives in celebration of Women’s History Month.

The group of exhibitors were narrowed down from 190 submissions, which raised and donated 2.440€ to Red Cross Ukraine.

The Untended Garden - MFA Thesis Exhibition

March 2022 - The Untended Garden MFA Thesis Exhibition will be held at Cedar House Gallery in Savannah, Georgia!

The opening reception will be held on Friday, April 1st, 2022 from 6-9pm. This coincides with First Friday, so this is a wonderful opportunity to add Cedar House Gallery into the gallery explorations of the evening!

This is the first time that all three Acts of the work will be shown - the work will be available for future exhibitions after the show is completed. Hope to see you there!

May 2022 - The CCS Student Exhibition Opening was back for 2022! Excited to be able to include A Lack of Control - Duo 12 as a part of Re/View: The CCS Alumni Exhibition. Attending CCS was such a pivotal moment of my development as an artist and I am always honored to be a part of the exhibit.

April 2022 - Silver Water Collective is SO delighted to announce our debut exhibition, Sterling Presence as a part of the Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival! To have our first exhibition at such a premiere experience is beyond all of our expectations. Come and visit us tomorrow!

April 2022 - The Untended Garden MFA Thesis Exhibition at Cedar House Gallery in Savannah, Georgia was an incredible success! Here are some selected images from the exhibition opening on Friday, April 1st, 2022.

So incredibly grateful for all of the help, love, and support that I received throughout the entire process of this endeavor. This was an absolute labor of love.

April 2022 - Alternative Processes selected images from The Untended Garden to be a part of their exhibit Alternative Narratives in celebration of Women’s History Month.

The group of exhibitors were narrowed down from 190 submissions, which raised and donated 2.440€ to Red Cross Ukraine.

April 2022 - The Untended Garden - Thrive was selected as a Juror’s Selection by juror Darren Ching for the New York Center for Photographic Arts online exhibition The Human Body!

March 2022 - The Untended Garden MFA Thesis Exhibition will be held at Cedar House Gallery in Savannah, Georgia!

The opening reception will be held on Friday, April 1st, 2022 from 6-9pm. This coincides with First Friday, so this is a wonderful opportunity to add Cedar House Gallery into the gallery explorations of the evening!

This is the first time that all three Acts of the work will be shown - the work will be available for future exhibitions after the show is completed. Hope to see you there!

March 2022 - “The Untended Garden - Gaze” and “The Untended Garden - Flutter” will be included in the LoosenArt Gallery exhibition Auto Focus. A Portrait of the Self at Millepiani in Rome, Italy. The exhibition runs June 8-16th!

Other notable artists included in the exhibition are Man (Jane) Zhu and Silver Water Collective artist Cristina Casiano!
